NO DRONES
Once we learned about DRONES - especially Obama intentionally increasing their use against people of Pakistan; and the May 4th attack on Farah, Afghanistan when over 100 people were murdered - we were compelled to ACTION to both increase public awareness and to eliminate DRONES immediately.
We were greatly inspired by the GROUND the DRONES (Click here) Action by the Voices for Creative Non-Violence, Pace e Bene, and Nevada Desert Experience, who in April of 2009 spent 2 weeks in the desert at Creech AFB, Indian Springs Nevada protesting the use of these monstrous killing machines. Fourteen activists were arrested (Click here) at this action and will be going to court Wednesday Sept 30th.
We decided to launch a NO DRONES campaign with two major components:
- Public Education (Click here); and
- On-going and widespread Actions against the DRONES (Click here).
We began with a "Teach-In" on the DRONES in May, set up a list serve (Click here) and now web site, developed information flyers and fact sheets (Click here), spearheaded another 'encampment' at Creech in July (Click here), held a Round Table on the DRONES in August (Click here), sent out information nation-wide to begin to grow coalitions working to GROUND the DRONES.
We are putting out the call and organizing on-going 'encampments' at Creech and other Air Force Bases (Click here) around the country that are or will be operating DRONES from those locations too.
We urge everyone who cares about protecting human life and the future of this planet to seriously consider how many hours a day you are willing and able to dedicate to this campaign to GROUND the DRONES.
We can NOT ignore these exponentially growing weaponry terrorizing people around the world from their bright blue skies.
We MUST end this violence against all life, this violence perpetuated by our military in our name. We must NOT tolerate this another moment.
All of our weapons of war are heinous and insufferable for any and all human beings. DRONES are not merely the newest horror:
DRONES are the most egregious component of recent war 'toys' and should incite public furor comparable to initial reactions against nuclear bombs.
DRONES are unmanned aircraft that are remotely controlled by US soldiers sitting at a computer console in Nevada or New York, operating a joy stick and pushing buttons that direct the DRONE to spy and kill thousands of miles away in someone else's country.
Some DRONES are armed with bombs; some 'only' spy. Companies are racing to make DRONES that can drop biological and chemical weapons; utilize nuclear, lazar, microwave weapons.
Some fit into the palm of your hand; others are so big they fit into an airplane hanger on an angle. Some can be programmed to fly on their own; others are controlled by the soldier in this country while they are killing in another country.
There are almost 1000 different kinds of DRONES being manufactured in 39 countries.
In 2001, when we invaded Afghanistan, the military had about 100+ DRONES; by Jan 2009 when Obama took office, we had 7000; today we have 12,000.
The third day Obama was in office, he authorized a huge increase in DRONE attacks against Pakistan resulting in as many attacks in 3 months as in the total for the past three years.
The military itself acknowledges that for every one "bad guy" the DRONES assassinate, FIFTY civilians are murdered.
PLEASE seriously consider coming to Creech Air Force Base Sept 25th- 30th. We will caravan to Creech from the Bay Area (Click here). Or organize a caravan from your town. Hold press conferences and actions in the towns you pass through.
Womyn can stay at the Goddess Temple about 2 miles north of Creech. There is also an RV park and a small motel right next to Creech and camping close by as well.
Come to the NO DRONES Orientation (Click here) Sunday, Sept 20th, 1:00pm at Vault Restaurant, 3250 Adeline St, Berkeley. Call 510-540-7007 to rsvp.
Check the calendar for specific actions each day. And feel free to plan other actions too. If you can only come for three days, please come for the 28th-30th. But the most important thing is to BE THERE, whether for one hour, one day or all days… just BE THERE!
